The dragon (龍) is one of the eight gods that protect Buddhism and is called the Dragon God. Since the dragon is the god of water, temples built of wood were decorated with dragons for protection against fire. For farmers, dragons were used to pray for protection against rain, and for fishermen, dragons were drawn or installed to protect against water obstacles.

The dragon has always been a symbol of authority and respect, but also a sign of good fortune and is generally benevolent. In addition, it brings happiness, wealth and success, and symbolizes wisdom, perseverance and immortality in the Japanese mind, so we can see them represented in various forms of art in temples or in traditional houses.

This piece also contains an Enso circle 円相; this is a circle done with brush in one stroke ink and originally comes from Zen culture. This reflects the artist’s mind at the time of composition by means of a single stroke, so it will be unique to each piece.
