不動心 – Fudōshin – Determination

不動心  Fudōshin – Determination – Japanese Calligraphy

Strong and unwavering solid mind.
Of the five spirits of Budo, traditionally, there are five spirits (Shin) desirable in a Budoka, the aptitudes that combine mind and body, and go towards a transcendental and metaphysical state.

Shoshin: (初心) Mind of the eternal beginner.
Zanshin: (残心) Persistent mind.
Mushin: (无心) No Mind.
Fudōshin: (不动心) Solid, strong and unyielding mind.
Senshin: (先心) Compassionate and enlightened mind.

The word Shin in Japanese can be translated as heart, mind or spirit, it is a combination of all three.

Fudōshin is the pursuit of both mental and physical courage and stability. It describes a condition and state of serenity that helps us to avoid being easily affected by internal thoughts or external forces. Maintaining a correct attitude in the face of any attack.

This piece also contains an Enso circle 円相; this is a circle done with brush in one stroke ink and originally comes from Zen culture. This reflects the artist’s mind at the time of composition by means of a single stroke, so it will be unique to each piece.
