侘寂 – Wabi Sabi

This is probably one of the most popular Kanji in traditional Japanese aesthetics. Wabi-sabi (侘寂) is a worldview centered on accepting transience and imperfection, appreciating the beauty that is “imperfect, transitory and incomplete” in nature. “Wabi” means tranquility and freshness and ‘Sabi’ which refers to the serenity and beauty that emerges with the passage of time.

This piece also contains an Enso circle 円相; this is a circle done with brush in one stroke ink and originally comes from Zen culture. This reflects the artist’s mind at the time of composition by means of a single stroke, so it will be unique to each piece.
